Department of Economic Development

The Department of Economic Development “began a new stage of modernization and development emanating from the Sagacious vision of the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, " may God protect him ", following issuance of the “Law No. (2) of 2009 Concerning the Establishment of the Department of Economic Development”, which ordained the restructuring of the former “Department of Planning and Economy”. The Law prompted changing name of the former department to be: the "Department of Economic Development", and empowered the Department to serve the needs of the growing economy, according to the aspirations of the emirate towards progress and prosperity.

 The Law, entrusted the Department of Economic Development, to play a leading role within the comprehensive future vision, reinforced by the judicious guidance of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. The Department of Economic Development has set itself to achieve the goals of the “Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030”, as well as the insightful vision of His Highness to rank Abu Dhabi Government as one of the best five governments in the world.

 Based on the Department’s mission to lead the economy of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, by realizing the set economic agenda, in order to achieve diversity and sustainability in a knowledge-based economy, supported by the strengthened competitiveness of the emirate and its stance in the global economy; thereby ensuring prosperity for the population of the emirate. Based on the values of the Department of leadership, interaction, balance and responsibility, the Department provides its supportive services in the interest of the emirate's economy and the community of Abu Dhabi in general.

 The Department works on proposing economic policies, development plans and strategies, as well as laws, rules and regulations, in cooperation with the appropriate government departments and stakeholders. The responsibilities vested in the Department include licensing, registration, control and protection, of commercial and business activities. The Department of Economic Development renders a spectrum of services, for business development, as well as the conducting of studies; and constructing and releasing of economic indicators, to help improve the economic environment, boost investment, and enhance the competitiveness of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The Department is keen to maintain interaction and enduring communication with the community, in the context of its social and corporate responsibility and provides a various initiatives and events in this regard.
